Yuka Kimura Receives the 2024 Paper Award from the Japan Society of Material Cycles and Waste Management

On May 30, 2025 (Friday), the 2024 Annual Awards Ceremony of the Japan Society of Material Cycles and Waste Management was held at the Kawasaki City Industrial Promotion Hall. Ms. Yuka Kimura, a recent graduate of the master's program, received the Paper Award (Japanese-language category) for her research paper based on the results of her master's thesis.

The awarded study involved the design of a proposed system that combines multiple intervention methods, which have been shown to be effective in reducing household food waste. An intervention experiment was conducted with 14 participants, and the results confirmed a reduction in food waste for all subjects. These findings suggest the effectiveness of the proposed system. The award was given in recognition of the rarity of such intervention-based studies in Japan, as well as the novelty of combining multiple intervention approaches that include interactive communication. The research offers valuable insight into the development of intervention systems utilizing rapidly advancing AI technologies.

In addition to Ms. Kimura as the lead author and Professor Naohiko Kohtake as her academic advisor, Professor Mizuho Sato of Tokyo University of Agriculture, who served as a co-researcher, was also recognized with the award.
