Course Description
    The relationship between project management and systems engineering is discussed. Lectures cover basic thinking of PPPM (project/ program/ portfolio management) and five process groups of Project Management; initiating, planning, excecuting, monitoring and controling, and closing.

    Excercises are focussed on application of project management tools and techniques to each student's thesis research. Major tools are WBS (work breakdown structure), stakeholder analysis, risk analysis, CPM (critical path method), bar chart (known as Gantt Chart), EVM (earned value management), and so on.

Objective and Method of the Course
    This course is an introduction to PPPM, especially to Project Management processes, tools and techniques. The three primary course objectives are:
    1. Learn the key terms of Global Project Management.
    2. Understand the core principles of Project Management processes.
    3. Apply Project Management tools and techniques to each student's project planning and execution.

Course Schedule

    No.1 2018/10/05 Overview of Project Management (By Toma)
    Introduce PPPM (Project/Program/Portfolio Management) and global standards, PMBOK Guide. Define the characteristics of a project. Learn organizational influences on Project Management, five PM process groups, and ten knowledge areas.

    No.2 2018/10/05 Initiating Process Group (By Toma)
    Learn two processes of Initiating Process Group. Develop Project Charter is the first process of developing a document that formally authorizes a project or a phase. Identify Stakeholder is the next step of identifying the people, groups, or organizations that could impact or be impacted by the project.

    No.3 2018/11/02 Planning Process Group 1 (By Toma, Haga)
    Mini Test 1. Lean 24 processes of Planning Process Group in three lectures. The first lecture covers project integration, Scope, and stakeholder management.

    No.4 2018/11/02 Group Excercise - Planning 1 (By Toma, Haga)
    Group excercise is to apply project management tools to thesis researches. During the class, pick one of group members research theme for example. Individual research application will be done as homework assignment. Create WBS and stakeholder analysis.

    No.5 2018/11/16 Planning Process Group 2 (By Toma, Otsuka)
    Mini Test 2. The second lecture of planning group covers project quality, human resource, communication, risk, and procurement management. Learn tools for risk management.

    No.6 2018/11/16 Group Excercise - Planning 2 (By Toma, Otsuka)
    Identify risks, perform qualitative and quantitative rist analysis, and plan risk responses.

    No.7 2018/12/07 Planning Process Group 3 (By Toma, Ito)
    Mini Test 3. The third lecture of planning group covers project time and cost management. Learn tools for both management processes.

    No.8 2018/12/07 Group Excercise - Planning 3 (By Toma, Ito)
    Develop schedule by creating CPM, bar chart, and schedule baseline. Estimate costs and create cost baseline.

    No.9 2018/12/21 Executing, Monitoring & Controling, and closing Process Groups (By Toma, Ito)
    Mini Test 4. Lean 23 processes of Executing, Monitoring and Controling, and Closing Process Groups.

    No.10 2018/12/21 Group Excercise - Executing (By Toma, Ito)
    Monitor and control project work using EVM (earned value management).

    No.11 2019/01/18 Hybrid Project Management (By Toma, Imani)
    Mini Test 5. Listen to a research topic of project management methodology of Waterfall and Agile Hybrid.

    No.12 2019/01/18 Group Excercise (By Toma, Imani)
    Consider your research project using hybrid PM method.

    No.13 2019/01/25 Individual Presentation (By Toma, Otsuka)
    Individual presentation on each thesis project - project charter, planning tolls, EVM.

    No.14 2019/01/25 Grasping the Essence (By Toma, Yonezawa)
    Guest Professor Soichi Yonezawa talks and discusses about "Grasping the Essence" which maximizes your performance in business and in life, and can be highly applied to Project Management/Program Management.

    No.15 2019/02/08 Make up class (By Toma)
