科目概要(詳細)
Course Description
The objective of this course is for the students to understand the basics of social and management science research design, including literature review methods and various data-gathering and data-analysis methods, so that the students will be prepared to work on their master's or doctoral theses. Social and management science research design will be explained using the textbooks and various research papers and books. Each student will submit a report (total three reports, plus First, Qualifying Report) of a research-book review or research-paper review, and also submit a brief weekly description of the student's own research topic (called ABCD) twelve times, make a presentation on his/her ABCD twelve times, and get feedback from the instructor and also from the fellow students.
This course is intended to help the students gradually formulating their own research topics as social or management science research design for their master's or doctoral theses. This course format is based on the social and management science research design courses the instructor (Horiuchi) took at the graduate schools of three U.S. universities.

    1. To understand the fundamentals and process of social and management science research design and become able to design and conduct it.
    2. To be able to make effective scientific communications, both orally and in writing.
    3. To be able to understand and critically review social and management science research papers and books.

    Class Format:
In the first session on April 10, Tuesday, the instructor will give a qualifying-report assignment to all the students who wish to take this course.
Qualifying Report: In order to register in this course, a student must submit the qualifying report by email to the instructor by April 12, Thursday 20:00 (8 p.m.), and receive 60% or more in this qualifying-report assignment. In the class, each student will make a short presentation on his/her ABCD every week for 12 times. All the students’reports and ABCD short reports with the instructor's written comments will be distributed to the students. We will discuss each student's report and ABCD in class.
The class meets on the 3rd period on Tuesdays.

If you do not make a presentation, automatically 2 points from your semester grade are subtracted. The only exceptions are: (1) Sickness with a physician’s report (Shindansho/診断書). Submit your Shindansho within a week from the due date; or, (2) Delay of public transport. Submit a proof of delay (Chien-shoumeisho/遅延証明書) which is available at a train station or on Internet. Submit the Chien-shoumeisho within a week from the class you delayed or missed.

    3. Book-Review Report: Submit your book/research-paper-review reports three times during the semester. By 20:00 (8 p.m.) on Saturdays as you sign up. If you do not submit the report in time, automatically 1 point for each one day of delay will be subtracted from your semester grade. If you were sick, get a medical report (in Japanese “Shindansho”(診断書)in Japanese from a physician from your scheduled report-submission date. In such a case, there will be no penalty for the delay.
